Making comic with Expresii 以《Expresii》畫水墨漫畫

Have you thought about making comic with Expresii?  Here we show the process MEERKAT OJISAN produces their comic with Expresii:
 
STEP 1: Make a sketch on paper  by hand
STEP 2: Digitize  it  into your computer
STEP  3:  Trace the sketch with a dry brush using the Underlay (or Overlay) function in Expresii 

今天,我們介紹一下 狐獴大叔 (ミーアキャットおじさん)  是怎樣用Expresii  畫出水墨漫畫來的:
步驟 1:先手繪草圖
步驟   2:把草圖掃描進電腦
步驟  3:用Expresii 的 ’背景圖像’ ( ‘前景圖像’ 亦可)功能導入草圖,以乾筆把草圖描成線稿

STEP 4:  Switch to another layer and put down wet ink 
步驟  4:在另一圖層,用濕筆加入墨色層

對於Expresii 裡作畫,狐朦大叔作者表示 “是一種享受!”  “水墨太好玩了!”  “速度很快,比PS 好多了!”(注:他的電腦配有獨立顯卡,而Expresii 的水墨模擬運用了顯卡GPU運算故速度很快。顯卡不需要太貴的,就如 美金$100 的GT740 2GB已經很流暢)

I can't emphasize enough the ability to zoom-in in Expresii. See a few close-ups below.  It's simply stunning when you look at the hi-res output!
Expresii 可以輸出超大的圖。當你看到整幅大圖,有著那些微妙的水墨滲化效果,會覺得很震撼!

With  12k  output, you'll have no problem making a large print of your work if you need to.  👌

Lastly,
STEP 5:  Export a snapshot  as PNG or PSD (alpha  supported;  layers preserved in PSD)  or do a Copy (Ctrl-C)
STEP 6: Import or Paste (Ctrl-V) the image  into  Photoshop  to do some  color adjustment
STEP 7:  Frame and add text (using third-party tool)

最後,
步驟 5 :匯出畫作為PNG  或 PSD  圖檔 (支持 alpha;PSD 還可保留圖層),或拷貝(Ctrl-C)到剪貼板
步驟   6:匯入或貼上(Ctrl-V) 到用Photoshop 調一下顏色
步驟   7:再用其他軟體排框和加文字

That's it.  Here is the finished piece    這樣一格漫畫就大功告成啦,看完成圖 :

Animation Talk

Yesterday Raman Hui  shared  with us his adventure in animation and his up-coming movie Monster Hunt 捉妖記. We're lucky enough to have a sneak peek at the new movie. After years working in the US, Raman finally came back to Asia to make a movie here!

Some weeks ago when I first saw the movie posters, it's  obvious  they are trying to infuse a sense of Chinese aesthetics into the work, and I had high expectation from them. But  frankly, I am a bit disappointed when I saw the clips,  which suggested that the actual movie is just  like a regular one. I'm not saying the movie is bad, but it doesn't seems like there's any breakthrough.  I could be wrong, as it was just some short clips that we saw.  I hope I am wrong.

During the talk,  someone raised the question of 2D vs 3D and mentioned Paperman , which used new software technology to blend between 2D and 3D.  China (as well as other Asian countries) do have animators that can rival those in the US, but their R&D is still years behind.  It's about time that we also use R&D to create something new and inspiring. I eagerly anticipate the day when we can really combine Chinese ink painting aesthetics into animation. Our Expresii is already used in comic making and we hope we can gradually do more with animation.

當然,要做到連平台系統也支持要投入大量資源。當然,要做到連平台系統也支持要投入大量資源。人力方面亞洲當然沒問題,技術方面我覺得也是可以解決。日後有機會可真的要寫個建議書。
We thank the organizer of TypeMeet 字體聚  ‘本地薑’ , a  seminar  for topics on font and character designs, for letting us show our work there.  It's encouraging that  so many attended the public talks. 

The talks focused on design topics happening locally.  One problem we face today is that the current design tools mostly cater for Western ways of doing things.  We need more tools like Expresii so that we can more efficiently create digital works  that inherits our own culture.

日前我們參加了字體聚  ‘本地薑’ 研討會。會中講者提及:為什麼西方typeface 跟手寫字很接近,但中文的typeface 跟我們手寫的是那麼的不同?那是因為我們都用了西方的一套來做中文(第一套中文印刷體是西方人造的)。

目前中文字形的建立比歐文艱鉅得多,因為太多字,而且用西方的一套outline font 形式表達中文書法字體往往不適合。我們是不是要檢討一下,有沒有其他方式去表達中文?加入像Expresii 般的font rendering system 可能是一條出路。
